The day the peas went ting ting

After I moved out I went to live with two of my older brothers and older sister. We had specific nights that it was our turn to cook. I was 18 at the time and was just really beginning to experiment with cooking creations. Even at that age I suppose I was frugal. I knew I somewhat enjoyed the canned stew bought at the grocers. I know right? GAG! I wouldn't touch that junk with a 20ft pole these days!!

So, it was my night to cook. I decided I would make the most delectable stew that ever hit my family's taste buds. My nephew Dave was over too and that boy is a big eater. I'd have to dig out the biggest pot available. I bought a large piece of steak and even cut it into chucks myself. There was no buying already cut up stew meat. I was making a homemade dinner...and it was going to be fabulous.

I pan fried the steak chunks and seasoned them well, made a gravy with the drippings, sliced up potatoes and boiled them. Once that was all done I added everything to the big honkan kettle and dumped in a bag of split peas.

Ok, now you're wondering why in the world I would dump in a bag of peas. Well, I needed the green for color of course and I added carrots too. Remember, I was in the works of making the best stew. Ever.

I seasoned the pot of stew up with assorted spices, stirred it lovingly and let it simmer for a few hours.

Dinner time rolled around and I set the table and I may have even made rolls or some sort of bread. Mike, Laurie, Kelly and Dave were called to the table, we dished up our food into the big honkan soup bowls. I know I was ecstatic just thinking I was serving them the greatest stew ever. There would be no more canned filth. Well......the meat was too tough and too salty but the gravy had a nice consistency. The color mixture was great though. But, the peas were still hard little pebbles. At first everybody ate their most delicious stew in silence. I do think they were trying to be nice. I finally spit my peas out and everybody else followed. They made a ting ting sound as we plunked them on our dishes. I'm so lucky nobody broke their teeth that night and thank goodness Ken wasn't over for dinner that night!! I'm pretty sure he would have run far far away and I'd be an old maid with 158 cats.

I now know that peas and beans need to be soaked overnight. I guess I thought they were dehydrated and would zap back to life when I dumped them in. I do make stew now and it is pretty delish. Ken despises peas so I really don't have to worry about ever making that mistake again.

Experimenting

This post is brought to you from the weirdo with the mask, goggles and rubber gloves. I've been experimenting...in my kitchen with some heavy duty stuff. Here's a hint. And no, I am not eating lard, preparing for lard wrestling in the backyard or making Mrs Brady's meatloaf for the Brady Bunch!!
I'll be able to post all about it in approximately 3 days. =) Hope you are enjoying your weekend & doing something fun!!

Guess who made our dinner?

Guess who made our dinner tonight? If you guessed Stone's Downtown Deli you'd be right!! We hadn't planned on going there tonight but my brother, Kelly called this afternoon & inquired about it. So we invited ourselves & made it a mini family shin dig. You have to remember I have 20 siblings...

Mike, Kelly, Joe & Laurie ordering their food.
They even have big enough tables for a mini shin dig of Pepin's!

My brother Mike on his way into the dining room.

I got Kelly to stop and pose too

Hold up Joe!! We've gotta take your picture too!!!

And my sis Laurie making her grand entrance

Once again...two happy people...who happen to be full of some scrumptious food =)

Stone's Downtown Deli

These are pics of one of my most favorite places to eat downtown. Stone's Downtown Delicatessen. The building is old (as are all our buildings on our Main Street) What character though!!!

In previous years this building was The Wiffletree. They sold men's fine clothing there & rented suits. Even then the place was filled with character.
I didn't get a picture of the deli part of it but you can sit on either side. This side is where they have gourmet coffees, smoothies & ice cream. Charming huh?

The food is out of this galaxy folks!! I kid you not! We try something new each time we go & we have never had anything that hasn't been anything less than delish!! In fact today was so into his food that he was moaning as he took each bite. He told me that the sandwich he was eating was THE BEST sandwich he has ever eatin'....IN HIS WHOLE LIFE!!!

Clearly a full, happy couple!!

Butt Dust!!!

What is butt dust?' Read on and you'll discover the joy in it! These have to be original and genuine. No adult is this creative!!

JACK (age 3) was watching his Mom breast-feeding his new baby sister. After a while he asked: 'Mom why have you got two? Is one for hot and one for cold milk?'

MELANIE (age 5) asked her Granny how old she was. Granny replied she was so old she didn't remember any more. Melanie said, 'If you don't remember you must look in the back of your panties. Mine say five to six.'

STEVEN (age 3) hugged and kissed his Mom good night. 'I love you so much that when you die I'm going to bury you outside my bedroom window.

'BRITTANY (age 4) had an earache and wanted a pain killer. She tried in vain to take the lid off the bottle. Seeing her frustration, her Mom explained it was a child-proof cap and she'd have to open it for her. Eyes wide with wonder, the little girl asked: 'How does it know it's me?

'SUSAN (age 4) was drinking juice when she got the hiccups. 'Please don't give me this juice again,' she said. 'It makes my teeth cough.

'DJ (age 4) stepped onto the bathroom scale and asked: 'How much do I cost?'

MARC (age 4) was engrossed in a young couple that were hugging and kissing in a restaurant. Without taking his eyes off them, he asked his dad: 'Why is he whispering in her mouth?

'CLINTON (age 5) was in his bedroom looking worried. When his Mom asked what was troubling him, he replied, 'I don't know what'll happen with this bed when I get married. How will my wife fit in it?

'JAMES (age 4) was listening to a Bible story. His dad read: 'The man named Lot was warned to take his wife and flee out of the city but his wife looked back and was turned to salt.' Concerned, James a sked: ''What happened to the flea?

'TAMMY (age 4) was with her mother when they met an elderly, rather wrinkled woman her Mom knew. Tammy looked at her for a while and then asked, 'Why doesn't your skin fit your face?'

The Sermon I think this Mom will never forget: this particular Sunday sermon...
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face, 'Without you, we are but dust...' He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Gary & Quirky Crocheting

We went to the Gary Alan concert Saturday night...Great show I might say!!!
Today friends of ours Pat & Sam & 2 of their boys came over to visit. The boys flocked into the den to play video games while Sam & I crocheted. Sooo, I made a couple quirky things.

A fish toy with catnip for the kitties

and a fun lil basket crocheted out of strips of fabric. I'll be putting stuff inside it & I'm sure it'll make more sense & look not so sad.
That pretty much sums up our weekend. Well I left out the decorating of the outside of the house & different house cleaning things we did. We've got a busy week ahead of us!!! Off to make some cookies now & snuggle with the hubbykins =)

Seize The Moment!!

Will You Dance With Me? READ THIS VERY SLOWLY.... IT'S PRETTY PROFOUND.

Too many people put off something that brings them joy just because they haven't thought about it, don't have it on their schedule, didn't know it was coming or are too rigid to de part from their routine.

I got to thinking one day about all those women on the Titanic who passed up dessert at dinner that fateful night in an effort to cut back. From then on, I've tried to be a little more flexible.

How many women out there will eat at home because their husband didn't suggest going out to dinner until after something had been thawed? Does the word 'refrigeration' mean nothing to you?

How often have your kids dropped in to talk and sat in silence while you watched 'Jeopardy' on television?

I cannot count the times I called my sister and said, 'How about going to lunch in a half hour?'

She would gas up and stammer, 'I can't. I have clothes on the line. My hair is dirty. I wish I had known yesterday, I had a late breakfast, It looks like rain.' And my personal favorite: 'It's Monday.' She died a few years ago. We never did have lunch together.

Because Americans cram so much into their lives, we tend to schedule our headaches. We live on a sparse diet of promises we make to ourselves when all the conditions are perfect!

We'll go back and visit the grandparents when we get Steve toilet-trained.

We'll entertain when we replace the living-room carpet...

We'll go on a second honeymoon when we get two more kids out of college.Life has a way of accelerating as we get older. The days get shorter, and the list of promises to ourselves gets longer. One morning, we awaken, and all we have to show for our lives is a litany of 'I'm going to,' 'I plan on,' and 'Someday, when things are settled down a bit.'

When anyone calls my 'seize the moment' friend, she is open to adventure and available for trips. She keeps an open mind on new ideas. Her enthusiasm for life is contagious. You talk with her for five minutes, and you're ready to trade your bad feet for a pair of Roller blades and skip an elevator for a bungee cord..

My lips have not touched ice cream in 10 years. I love ice cream. It's just that I might as well apply it directly to my stomach with a spatula and eliminate the digestive process The other day, I stopped the car and bought a triple-Decker. If my car had hit an iceberg on the way home, I would have died happy.

Now...go on and have a nice day. Do something you WANT to......not something on your SHOULD DO list. If you were going to die soon and had only one phone call you could make, who would you call and what would you say? And why are you waiting? Make sure you read this to the end; you will understand why I sent this to you.

Have you ever watched kids playing on a merry go round or listened to the rain lapping on the ground? Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight or gazed at the sun into the fading night? Do you run through each day on the fly? When you ask ' How are you?' Do you hear the reply? When the day is done, do you lie in your bed with the next hundred chores running through your head? Ever told your child, 'We'll do it tomorrow.' And in your haste, not see his sorrow? Ever lost touch? Let a good friendship die? Just call to say 'Hi?

When you worry and hurry through your day, it is like an unopened gift....Thrown away..... Life is not a race Take it slower. Hear the music before the song is over.

It's National Friendship Week.. Show your friends how much you care. I cherish our friendship and appreciate all you do. 'Life may not be the party we hoped for... but while we are here we might as well dance!

Lightbulb Ornies

What does one do when the fate of our country is put into voters hands? Why we paint lighbulbs!! Or at least I opted to do that this afternoon to keep my head from exploding. This election has me pretty fired up!! Anyways, onto the ornies (abreviation for ornaments).

I took my drawer of paints downstairs so I could still kep my ears open on the election stuff & went to town painting.
It's a pig in progress =)

On the far left we have a lady reindeer, then a boy reinderr & lastly a doggy. I know nobody wants to see the contents of my curio cabinet but it's the only place I could hang these semi wet ornies from to photograph. And well, we all know I'm not one for having much patience...expecially when I'm excited!! What a funtastical project this was. And a wunnaful way to use burnt out, or in our case the lightbulbs after you changed over to energy effecient ones!!
Don't throw out those bulbs!!! Make something!!! I double dog dare ya =)

Geocacheing, and friends

Sunday morning I saw on the phone that my lil sis had called. Ken & I had planned on making a visit to their house this weekend. We were going to try to cram as much as possible into this last hoorah of summer weekend.
I called miss Libs & she asked if we'd be interested in going geocacheing. If you have any love of the outdoors I encourage you to particiapate in this fun activity!! It's been a good couple years since we'd been caheing so we were all about going on this outing. Plus any day of seeing my sis & brother in law & the babies is a totally fabulous reason to get out & about!!
We did 3 caches in the Esky area & then traveled to Rapid River for our next cache. It took us down a seasonal road. We ended up not doing that search. It was getting to be the girls nap time.
So my sis & her hubby headed back home while Ken & I picked blueberries & blackberries.
On the way home Ken & I stopped to grab a little bite to eat. We had plans on going to my sis' to visit after dinner but after our swim in Lake Michigan we were pooped out & decided we'd just stay home & chill. Well, then we got a phone call from Pat & Sam & decided to take a quick run out there. Their apple trees are dropping fruit already so we collected apples from the tree so I can make some applesauce for Mr Pat & had a bonfire and ate cake. Our fun was cut rather short becaause I had a mini spin attack while there & had to take my what I call wackadoodle meds. I should have known it was only a matter of time that all of our outings & activities would catch up with me. It was all worth it though!!! We did amazing things with amazing people we love & yup, that rocks my socks bright purple!

Hooray for fabulous friends!

Saturday night we went to Pat & Sams for a bonfire. While there we discussed our outing to the Gas & Steam Engine Show. I told them of the treasures we found & Holy bean bags! Sammi told me that they had one of those milk jugs in their shed & that I should have told her I'd been wanting one. They live in an old post office & when they bought the house they inherited all sorts of old goodies. While in this shed we found numerous things. Things she was just not interested in & told me I could have!!!

There were buckets of the pretty blue mason jars! I had been admiring some of those such jars at the various antique booths just a few hours before at the show & here she had these treasures just collecting dust in her shed! I just adore those blue jars & envision wonderful items filling them & sitting them atop my cabinets. She gave me all of them!!!

After our shed scouring spree we went to the fire hall across the street to be dorks. Her uncle is the Chief of the fire dept & allowed us to dress up & acts like kids.

What a fantastical night with fantastical friends!!!

The bucket with blue jars & barrel from Pat & Sam

Here I am pre-scrubbing these wonderful blue jars. Look for them in a more finished appearance in a future post =)

This is the milk bottle from Pat & Sam...isn't it stunning! I still haven't decided what I shoudl paint on it...hmmmm any ideas?

Sam & Myself being dorks...as usual

Check out this big red truck!!! Woo hooo!!!

Lori (Sam's Mom), myself & Sammers waiting on the train to come...

This is Pat & Sam's not so itty bitty beastly dog Mesa. He's such an oaf of love!

Gas & Steam Engine Show fun

Ken arrived home late Friday night. But not late enough to put a damper in our plans of having a bon fire. While Ken ate I built a fire outside & set up our chairs just in time for ken to come back outside. Well, sitting on the chairs was uncomfortable & I was getting dizzy. See, we like to stare into the night sky & gaze at the stars. The end of summer always provides many shooting stars. It's one such thing Ken & I sooo enjoy. I went in the house, grabbed 2 quilts & two pillows. When I came back outside to Ken sitting on the chair, neck turned upward he asked what in the tarnation I was up to. I didn't answer him right away. I laid the big quilt on the ground, placed the two pillows at the top & before long Ken joined me on the blanket as we covered up with the other one while gazing at the stars. What a perfect night with the most perfect man!

*******

Saturday we slept in and went to the Gas & Steam Engine Show at the Fairgrounds. I look forward to attending this event every year. I am kicking myself in the heine now for not taking our camera with. As soon as we got there we began visiting the antique booths & about the 3rd one in we found a milk jar. The curves of these metal milk holders enthuse me for some reason. It still shows the Farm number on the top. Old things just rock my socks!! As we traveled to the numerous booths we were able to relive our youth. It's pretty scary when toys we had as kids show up at antique shows!! YIKES!!! I had all I could controlling myself into NOT purchasing the Smurf water glasses that reminded me of growing up. Oh how I adore those blue critters! LOL

******

As we made our way to the old time village we stopped at the granary & purchased 2 pounds of freshly ground cornmeal. We made our way to one building where a lady in period clothing was making rag rugs on a loom. She asked me if I'd like to try the loom. To which I replied, YES!! Actually I was thinking HECK YES!!!! Then was Ken's turn. It took some coaxing. Others were watching & I do believe ken was worried about his "manhood" for a short period of time. Oh how I wish we'd had the camera!! I stopped at the place where they make hand spun yarn & bought myself a beautiful skein of variegated sock yarn. Totally can't wait to make something yummy out of it!! By the sawmill there were two elderly gentlemen wearing overall bibs. One of the men approached me as we were walking by & asked if we'd like to try our hand at the 2 person saw. I was a bit apprehensive about doing that. I thought he meant Ken doing it with him. But he meant Ken & myself. Holy funness!! We sawed a chunk off the end of the log. Sigh, how I wish we'd had the camera with!! We made our way through several other booths, bought some fresh peaches & blueberries, and I found a gorgeous basket & a little plant stand at one booth. It's so amazing to me to see these old items & imagine how "simple" life was back then. What a perfect day with my wonderful hubby!!!

Birthday time

First of all….Happy September!! Hoooray! We made it through another August!!! Life has been busy here in Scatterbrain land.

On the 23rd we celebrated my 33rd birthday by having a cookout with some neighbors, friends & a couple family members joined us. My brother JJ spent the weekend because he had football, Mrs Rinne came over, my-inlaws, Alecta, my brother Pat & his wifey Kim & their son Jeremy & my brother Joe came after Church. It almost didn’t happen because Ken decided he’d share some sort of “sickness bug” with me. We didn’t tell people they were coming to help me celebrate my birthday as I don’t feel it’s necessary for people to bring cards or gifts & I‘d hate to have people feel obligated to do so. Just sharing good food, conversation & laughs is gift enough for me. Ahhh and food we had!!!

After the food was eaten, tummies swollen, we made a bon fire in our lil chimnea & sat out for quite some time just talking. Visiting with Pat & Kim till the wee hours of night was fantastic. I don’t see my brother Pat near enough & he’s one heck of a funny guy!

When I woke on Sunday morn I was beyond sick. Darn that dear hubby of mine. I spent most of the day in bed, or the bathroom or on the couch. One time as I laid down on the den couch my fuzzy Buster climbed atop my back.

Monday the 25th was my actual birthday. We slept in & laid around the house most of the morning. I was still not up to par but I forced myself to go out & do something. We went to a matinee at the theater & came home & ordered take out from my most favoritist restraunt…Swedish Pantry. If you are ever in the Upper Peninsula it is a must & I mean absolute MUST to dine at this scrumptious place!! The food is scrumptious & the atmosphere is exquisit. This was our 1st time ordering takeout from there. There was no way I could munster up enough oomph to go dine out & I don’t think having Kleenex hanging off one’s nose is proper etiquite. It was ever so nice dining at home in our jammies with my most favorite meal from there….a cup of cheese soup, home made Swedish Rye bread, beef pot roast with green beans, mashed potatoes & bread pudding with rum sauce for desert.

I recieved several fantastic phone calls & emails & cards from friends & family wishing me a fabulous day. Ken & I went to Flynn's Flowers to use the gift certificate Ken gave me. I picked out the most awesome Angel! She came with 4 different nic nac type things to place in her arms for each season. Thank you everybody for making my birthday ultra fabulous!!!

Flexible and broad minded, you can fit in to any situation. There's no telling where your life will take you.

Consistent and reliable, you like to count on structure and routine in your life.

Your emotions tend to be nervous and potent. Your energy - both positive and negative - deeply impacts your life.

You Communicate With Your Eyes
When you say, "I'll believe it when I see it" - you really mean it.
For you, what you see is a lot more important than what you hear.
You don't take someone's words at face value. You judge people by their facial expressions, body language, and appearance.
You tend to be quiet, but when you talk, you tend to make eye contact and describe things in colorful detail.

I think my older siblings will get a kick out of this one....they still call me a lil brat. LOL

You Are Bobby Brady
Ultra competitive, you will do almost anything to win. From pull ups to pool sharking, you're very talented.
And while everyone is aware of your victories, they still (affectionately) consider you to be a little brat!
